FHE 12-15-08

Last night we had the new missionaries over for supper. The meal was a little late because Papa had the groceries in the van when he ran an errand during the time to fix supper.... but worst part is, the enchilada sauce we bought in a can and baked over the burritos was really awful. So I apologized and said, "We always seem to have at least one dinner flop during each set of missionaries." To which Elder Henretty quipped, "Well, I'm glad we got that out of the way then!" LOL, talk about pressure to make all the others turn out right!

But it was enjoyable, we got to learn more about Elders Howard and Henretty and the families they came from as we had a course of sliced oranges and then dessert of ice cream and cake. Elder Hen' gave us a devotional about how we all have trials in life and may not understand why at the time but eventually we may see how that trial turned out to be for our good. Mikelle and Chelsy were here and Mikelle said that the fire that took their home has turned out to be a blessing in many ways, one of them being seeing people step forward to help them.

Elder How' gave the closing prayer and Papa drove them home (they still have no car at this time).

Lora then tried to cut Timmy's hair with help from several of us and distraction from Wilson.... the haircut is a work in progress, to be continued. He went to school that way this morning. Oh well, not much worse than it's been already!

This morning we took Joel, Ella and Lucy to the pediatrician. Lora came along to help. Ella came along to scream and demonstrate how to tantrum (lol, but true). The weather is so awful --ice with snow and still coming down-- that Papa drove us and then came back to pick us up at lunch break. It's so cold that your hands freeze to the bone between the building and the car if you're not wearing gloves. (I'm a native Oregonian, weather is not supposed to get like this. Tell me again why people live here? Because their ancestors never went West?) Meantime, Joel discovered the TV in the big waiting room and the three Christmas trees-- ay carumba!-- and attempted to unravel the mystery of the maze of doctors offices behind the front desk while we waited. I was mostly watching for Papa to arrive at the covered drive-up (except for the period of time that I chased Joel through the maze of offices, calling out for the nurses to stop smiling at him and stop him already) and while I was watching out the windows I saw a man with his medical supplies and no coat, hat or gloves stop at the glass doors, look out at the weather and the parking lot, trying to determine if he could make it or not... and I said to him in my head, "Don't do it! Don't do it!" But he dashed out anyway. Within seconds he turned into a large icicle and before he could reach the handle of his car, he'd fallen with a crash! I alerted the front desk and when the team had bundled up, they went out and put the man on a gurney and brought him inside to the ER. Good thing he was so close!

Just kidding, he didn't really turn into a large icicle. But he could have! This weather is so cold, you just can't take it lightly. Of course our kids were bundled like Ralphie's little brother Randy in "The Christmas Story". So many layers they can't put their arms down. And we won't be taking them out again unless absolutely necessary until this storm is over! Much more snow and ice is expected.

Hey Mike, we'll need more cocoa mix. ;o)

Being a native to the midwest, I may be the only one who loves this weather. Not so much the ice, but the cold and snow are how I grew up and it brings back fond memories of family time in the cold. I am laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes reading about the bundling of the kids and Joel running the maze of doctors' offices. Ya gotta love em.
